In Lust With Turquoise
I've had a total love affair with this precious stone ever since I started making jewelry. I love the warmth and organic nature of it and for some reason it makes me feel protected and safe when I wear it. Turquoise is a beautiful stone in it's natural state, however, it comes in many different shapes, forms and sizes. It's hard to know which one to buy. Once or twice a year, I travel to Arizona and visit some of the Southwestern jewelry stores and bead shops just for inspiration. I am always amazed by the huge selection of turquoise jewelry which is almost always enhanced in settings of 92.5 silver. Silver seems to set this stone off best and showcase the natural beauty of it. I also notice that there are women who completely deck themselves out in turquoise! Tons of rings, necklaces, earrings, belt buckles, ear cuffs and Western hats encrusted with Turquoise. However, turquoise is not just for the rodeo anymore! You have probably noticed that many CELEBRITIES opt for turquoise jewelry because it actually brings out the color of their eyes and makes the face light up! Literally. Who could forget that gorgeous turquoise necklace that Eva Mendez wore last year on the red carpet? What a statement! When I wear turquoise jewelry, I always feel like it totally brightens up my skin tone and brings out the blue in my eyes.

Buying good turquoise can be troublesome! If you want to buy a strand of real turquoise stones it's important to go to a reputable dealer and know what you're looking for. There are many commercially processed immitation versions of this stone and you can easily get ripped off. If you hear or see the words "stabilized" turquoise nuggets for example, that usually means that the stone has been crushed into a powder and then re-formed into a stone and sprayed with a shiny glaze. Stabilized turquoise is fine for novice beaders and jewelry makers who want to incorporate turquoise into their designs at a reasonable price, however, it is NOT the genuine stone and therefore you can not sell your jewelry and call it "genuine turquoise". I occasionally buy strands of stabilized turquoise for around $16-$35 a strand at my local bead shop. A strand of genuine precious turquoise could run anywhere from $85 (med quality) upwards of $300.
