HAMMERRED METAL - WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

When you browse around my website, you will notice that I have a few designs in which I have incorporated "hammerred" metals.  When I refer to "hammerred" this simply means that the metal has been texturized in some way.  One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by using "half hard" metals such as 92.5 sterling silver 16 or 18 gage wire http://www.artbeads.com/sswr18hh1.html; shaping out your design; laying it on a flat surface and then gently hammerring it so that it dents and flattens the metal.  Many jewelry artists do this by hand with a very specific technique that takes time to perfect; however, you can also buy commercially made pieces that are already hammerred and or texturized for you!  They are easy to use and fairly reasonable.  FOR EXAMPLE: the earrings below are made with hammerred rings which I purchased at Michael's Craft Store.  These rings are manufactured under the label "Industrial Chique" by a company in New York http://www.horizongroupusa.com/preview/ and I absolutely love the edginess of them!  I was very inspired by the design of these hoops and all I did was embellish them with crystals and hang them on the earwires.  They literally took me 10 minutes to make!

For this particular necklace, I am using my signature KNOTTY technique.  I first took 3 strands of 1mm black leather cord (each approx. 2 yards in length) and tied my hammerred silver FOCAL ring in the middle using a Lark's knot*.  Then I threaded and knotted Czech crystals all the way up each size to the desired length. The fringe part is made with gunmetal chain and stacks of Czech crystal rondelle beads.  The coolest part about this necklace is that all of the fringe pieces are individually made with lobster claw clasps so they are completely detachable.  I love to get more mileage out of every design I create and this is the perfect way to make it very VERSATILE!
