- 329 Columbus Ave., nr. 76th St. 212-362-0350Pretty much every afternoon since it opened in September, Make Meaning—the sprawling DIY crafts space on the Upper West Side—has been mobbed by the Bieber-and-under set, who busily create scented soaps, tweaked-out candles, greeting cards, jewelry, and (that old standby) painted mugs and plates. There’s a tangible buzz of preadolescent energy here, but rarely a shortage of clean work stations or raw materials. Surprisingly, most kids’ creations come out fairly polished, with no small thanks to staffers—or “Associate Creativity Enthusiasts”—who receive training on all manner of crafts and are free to hop in to help when necessary. Unlike many other activities for kids in this slightly awkward age range, it’s proved equally popular with both sexes—so much so that downtown and Upper East Side branches are in the works for later this year. Regulars should opt for the annual membership of $36, though there’s a flat day rate of $12, plus materials fees starting at $9 for small ceramics.

GO CHECK IT OUT WHEN YOU ARE IN NEW YORK...I worked with the talented and super busy staff at Make Meaning for 9 months last year to create several types of jewelry experiences for Kids, Teens and Adults. I feel confident that you will have a blast making i.e. The Knotty Necklace; Stretchy Bracelets (see below); Hooplah Necklaces (see below) and the latest fun FELT Fringe necklaces! If you're not a jewelry junkie, try one of the Soap Experiences created by talented artist Debbie Chialtis from Soapylove - she is a soap making QUEEN and the author of two books: Squeaky Clean Projects Using Melt and Pour Soap and the newly released The Art of Soap (available on her website and on Amazon). My other favorite Make Experience is the Candle Making created by Make's Director Melody Conwell. You can create gorgeous mosaic candles with cubes of color in them or these really cool "Candle Scapes" - no waiting and you don't have to come back to pick up the finished product - it's all done in about an hour - such a cool concept and appropriate for any age! Most, if not all of the creative experiences you will do at Make are based on the brainchild concepts of hard-working consultants/entrepreneurs from San Diego, CA! YAY FOR CRAFTY CALIFORNIANS!!! I am really hoping that Make eventually opens a location in San Diego as I feel certain it would be a huge hit here! Hint... Hint... Make!
