RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS...

One of the things my kids and I love to do every now and then is come up with new ideas for Random Acts of Kindness.  WHY?  Just because it makes you feel good!  I'll never forget one day when I was driving through the IN 'N OUT Burger pick-up lane a few years ago with my young son Chandler and I glanced in my rear-view mirror and saw a military guy in his truck behind me.  It was right around the time that Pres. Bush had called troops to war.  A quick thought occurred to me while I was picking up my son's and my order...buy this guy his lunch!  He is in service to our country!  So, when I paid for my order I asked the gal at the window "how much is the order for the guy in the truck behind me?".  She looked at me with a pretty smile and said "$5.34".  I told her that I wanted to pay for his meal and I gave her the money.  Then I also said to her "please don't tell him it's from me, just tell him it's on the house okay?"  My son Chandler looked at me with these huge, incredulous eyes and said "MOOOOOOOOOM....WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!!  That guy's gonna think you want to date him!!!"  I laughed hysterically and explained to my son that it was a Random Act of Kindness and whenever possible, you do it anonymously.  That's part of the fun.  They never have to know it was you and it makes you feel like you did something nice for someone else!  Ever since then, my son loves to come up with R.A.O.K.'s for others and he has become very creative at it.  Everything from paying someone's fee at a toll road booth to handing the security man who sits outside our bank a cup of hot coffee from Peet's. The point is, it doesn't matter if it's worth $5 or $500 - JUST DO IT without expectation and see what kind of magical things can happen in your day!

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON:

1)  Address 10 envelopes with the names and addresses of people you randomly select from the phone book.  Fold a $1, $5, or $10 bill in a white piece of paper that says "Happy Holidays" on it, place it in the envelope and mail it to those people anonymously.  You never know how this money might help someone in need.  (I don't recommend sending more than $10 as there are also lots of mail thieves out there too so be cautious of that!)

2)  Speak to the MANAGER at your local Denny's or Coco's restaurant (or something along those lines) and tell them you want to buy a hot breakfast, lunch or dinner for an elderly couple that comes in the restaurant on Christmas &/or New Year's Day.  This will probably cost you about $20.00 -$30.00 with beverage & tip for two people.  Then give a check to the Manager (payable to the restaurant) and trust that he/she will follow through with your request. (You also might want to slip the Manager a $5 tip for his/her help with your R.O.A.K.!)
3)  Give the people who are in service to you throughout the year a $10 Gift Certificate or Gift Card for Starbucks, Jamba Juice, etc. i.e. your mail man, grocery clerk, security guard at the bank, pool man, cleaning lady, pet sitter, baby sitter.  These people often get over-looked!

4)  Volunteer!!!  Help out for one entire day at a food bank, soup kitchen, mission, Goodwill or Salvation Army store.  Get your kids involved in this with you!

5)  Make some home-made batches of cookies, muffins or breads (i.e. banana, lemon-poppyseed, etc.)  Put them in pretty Holiday containers and leave in front of a few of your neighbor's doors.  Some people do not bake and really appreciate home-made goodies.

6)  MY FAVORITE:  Make some big batches of home-made soup i.e. Butternut Squash, Vegetable Minestrone, Beef & Barley, etc.  Pour into medium or large, sterlized mason jars and attach a recipe for the soup around the lid.  Put the soup in a pretty HOLIDAY gift bag and deliver anonymously to some of your local neighbors that you don't normally talk to, or, new people that have moved to the neighborhood.
